Hackers Target Cisco SD-WAN Systems to Steal Network Encryption Keys

Attackers exploited a critical vulnerability in Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN systems to install custom malware known as KeyDrift. The malware was designed to quietly copy and store the encryption keys used to protect data flowing between branch offices. If these keys are stolen, unauthorized actors could potentially decrypt and monitor sensitive communications across your network.

Who is affected

Organizations that run unpatched Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN controller software are affected.

How to mitigate it

  1. 1Verify and apply the official Cisco security updates released in February to all SD-WAN controllers immediately.
  2. 2Inspect SD-WAN systems for indicators of compromise or unexpected software installations associated with KeyDrift.
  3. 3Rotate your SD-WAN encryption keys and administrative credentials to invalidate any potentially stolen data.
  4. 4Ensure administrative access to SD-WAN management portals is restricted from the public internet.
