Google Disrupts 1.3-Million Android TV Box Botnet Sold to Cybercriminals

Google disrupted a botnet of over 1.3 million Android devices, primarily TV set-top boxes, after seizing control of the attacker servers. Investigations revealed that device manufacturer Videostrong intentionally installed a backdoor at the factory to sell network access to cybercriminals. Attackers exploited these compromised devices to commit digital advertising fraud and secretly route external internet traffic through owners' connections.

Who is affected

Organizations and remote employees using unvetted Android TV set-top boxes, specifically hardware produced by manufacturer Videostrong.

How to mitigate it

  1. 1Identify and inventory all streaming boxes and smart devices operating on your corporate and home-office networks.
  2. 2Immediately disconnect and replace unauthorized or off-brand Android TV devices, particularly those manufactured by Videostrong.
  3. 3Isolate smart televisions and multimedia equipment onto a dedicated, segregated IoT network segment.
  4. 4Require all workplace hardware and boardroom electronics to be vetted and purchased through approved IT procurement channels.
