STEAM Night Out Event – Corsair Public School

On Wednesday, May 29th 2019, Outsource IT had the great pleasure of organizing a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) night out event for students of Grades 3 to 5 at the Corsair Public School in Mississauga.

Almost 200 people attended the event organized by Outsource IT (a local IT Managed Services Provider with a local team of IT experts), in collaboration with SYNNEX Canada (a global distributor of technology products), and the Corsair Public School Team. The audience included students, parents, teachers, along with buyers from the board.

Research shows that by 2030 a global shortage of 85.2 million skilled workers will result in $8.5 trillion in unrealized revenue across financial, technology and manufacturing sectors. According to a recent CompTIA survey of IT business executives, almost 46 percent of those surveyed have seen a growth in the technical skills gap at their organization within the past two years. STEAM education programs and initiatives help bridge the gap by educating and bringing awareness to STEAM related careers.

Attendees were able to experience STEAM hands-on, from development through to the finished product, using technologies such as 3D Printing, Virtual Reality, Drones, Robotics and other technologies.

FIRST, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the youth of today to expand their knowledge and spark a zest for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), was also in attendance. Along with 8 students and 5 supervisory volunteers, FIRST demonstrated the different levels of robotics, which was a delight to the audience.

Kim Cooper gave a wonderfully informative speech on how important STEM is for young people. As the previous editor in Chief of OWL and the current Vice President of FIRST, she inspired everyone, and in particular young females in the audience.

The students were delighted by the different demonstrations and the numerous giveaways such as lunch boxes, and personalized buttons (with a picture of their choice). Other giveaways included two chrome books, an Asus phone, and an ergonomic chair.

Outsource IT would like to thank everyone who attended and participated in making this an extraordinary night where science and technology was enjoyed by everyone. In particular, we would really like to show our heartfelt appreciation to the vendors who funded the night’s event. It is no easy job feeding approximately 200 people! They included Asus, Ergotron, Google for Education, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, Promethean, Viewsonic, and Dremel. Without them, the night would not have been possible.
